Nestled in the
stunning ‘Base Court’ at heart of Hampton Court Palace amongst seven centuries
of history, promoters IMG presented 10 evenings of classical and contemporary
music through June.
Now in it’s 17th year, James Morrison, Beverley Knight,
Jools Holland and Level 42 were among the musicians performing at the Hampton
Court Palace Festival 2009. Opened by José Carreras on June 2nd, the classical artists
also included Russell Watson and a special Beethoven Festival Finale.
Possibly one of
the most civilized festivals in the summer calendar, the stunning Palace
Gardens were open to visitors providing a beautiful place to picnic and relax
before the performances. In place of the usual burger and chip vans were
concessions from Veuve Cliquot Champagne, Carluccios Hampers, a Delicatessen
and a demonstration cinema from Sky+ HD.
Lighting designer
Martin Nicholas oversaw the visual transformation of Base Court as well as many
of the palaces most impressive architectural spaces. Features ranging from the
pillars in Clock court, the stunning Fountain Court, the palaces many chimneys
and the front of the palace were lit with warm colours further emphasizing the
striking architecture and scale of the venue.
All of the
fixtures and installation was done with great care and due to the nature and
age of the building so PRG made a number of custom looms and stands.
The festival was
again a great success with nights such as James Morrison bringing a new,
younger audience to the unique and intimate venue that Hampton Court provides.
